About quantiles

Quantiles are numeric ranges chosen such that they each represent an equal number of observations. Quantiles are useful for partitioning map features based on some numeric value in a way that conveys the most information to the map reader.

Examples of quantiles are quartiles (which each represent one-fourth of all observations), deciles (which represent one-tenth), and percentiles (one-hundredth).
